Marantz PMD660

Pmd660Had a chance to play with the Marantz PMD660. I started the ball rolling on getting a few for our department immediately. It's that good...though not perfect. Here's a short pros and cons:

PROS:
Removable Compact Flash: no more capturing in real time. Sweetness. No need to keep the device to edit your files. 1 Gb CF can hold over 36 hours of mono .mp3.
XLR Input: what you'd expect from a pro-sumer recorder.
USB connect: Though I think most folks will probably simply bring the CF to a reader on the computer, this is useful nonetheless.
No moving parts: shock resistant, minimal maintenance.

CONS:
Bulky: a bit too bulky for what it is. I wouldn't mind losing the on-board speakers since I would be using my cans most of the time. I would imagine doing so would make the device smaller. Don't be fooled by the image at the link above. Those are some big hands holding that device.
Preset settings: out of the box, the PMD660 didn't have a setting for journalists (mic input, mono, .wav., silent skip off and so forth). Setting it up right is a bit cumbersome. Nevertheless, once you set it, you're done.
Plastic: the tactile feel seems a bit cheap. I'm sure it was cost saving issue as well as a ruggedness factor. But with devices such as the iPod, PSP and Archos in our culture, the plastic takes me back about a decade or so.
